The National University of Rwanda (NUR) has committed to continued support to the development of Huye District.
The commitment was echoed by the Rector of NUR Prof. Silas Lwakabamba the Prime Minister’s visit in the District where he convened a meeting with Huye opinion leaders this week.
The Premier Dr. Pierre Damien Habumuremyi in his address challenged Huye population for the slow speed in development of Huye city in comparison to the progress of other cities in Country such as Musanze (North), Muhanga ( South), Rubavu ( West) and Rusizi ( West).
He called upon all institutions operating in Huye District including NUR to work together towards the development of Huye. He said that NUR as an academic institution with different domains of expertise should play a key role in development district.
In response, Lwakabamba said that NUR has already put in place the program of contributing to the development of Huye.
“We understand our role in the development of Huye. In this regard, we have adopted one village in Huye called Mucunda where students and staff members through Umuganda are helping and we invested financially in this village,” he said.
He reiterate that NUR is committed to continue supporting the District and he requested for better cooperation with Huye District authorities by defining which support the District needs from NUR as academic institution.
The Prime Minister put a particular emphasis on the construction of Hotels and requested investors to construct at least four star hotels and rehabilitate those already existing in accordance with current Rwanda standards of hotels.
He called upon investors to increase the number of factories and develop other economic activities. Regarding challenges to the development of Huye as presented by residents, the Prime Minister recommended quick solutions to some challenges like the rehabilitation of Huye airport, availing electricity in all sectors of Huye District among other things.
