NUR in Heroes’ talk

Staff and students of the National University of Rwanda have begun public talk in the framework of National Heroes’ week.

The talk turned around values of heroism in line of the theme which is “Heroism is a foundation of Dignity and Development”.

The deputy Director of the Centre for Conflict Management Jean Bosco Habyarimana, pointed out the relevance of a public talk about National Heroes in the academic environment like NUR.

He noted that it’s relevant to university students mainly made of youth to grow up with knowledge of heroes’ characters.

Professor Déo Byanafashe, an expert in Political History says that a hero is a person who fights for the cause of the common interest and gets ready to sacrifice his or her life to defend a given cause.

He mentioned bravery, patriotism, wisdom, truth, discipline, and humanity among characteristics of heroes. He also talked about the categories of heroes namely Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi.

While explaining about essence of heroes’ characteristics and categories Byanafashe urged youth to consider heroes as their role models and follow in their footsteps.

“University students as elites should help fellow citizens to understand values of heroism for the benefit of the country.”

He elucidated that heroism is not only about military deeds as many people assume. He indicated that heroism is all about achievements regardless age, gender, profession and height.

Jonathan Dusabe, a student in 4th year Applied Statistics thinks that such talk is very important for us as it is an opportunity to learn how to become a hero.

“Some time bak, there were public talks aiming at sensitizing hatred among citizens but now we are learning values to build our country,” says Dusabe.

From January 23-31, 2013, public talks on heroism are organized in different institutions and villages to mark the 19th National Heroes’ Day. The day falls on February 1.

The talks aims at sharing ideas on how best citizens can strive for the principles that characterize Rwanda’s heroes.
