The Girls Leaders Forum (GLF) has been launched at the National University of Rwanda. The forum which aims at developing cultural values and leadership among female students is the first of its kind in Rwanda’s higher learning institutions.
Rosette Nkundimfura, one of the pioneers of the forum stated that the initiative was established following the realization that some university girls behave inappropriately and that girls are not sensitized to participate in leadership.
“As leaders we gathered and evaluated the day to day life of a girl at university. We noticed that there are some girls who misbehave and engage in activities such as prostitution, idleness, and doing drugs.
We also tackled gender issues regarding leadership and found that girls are not sensitized enough to take up leadership positions,” explained Nkundimfura.
She added that as a solution to the problems they decided to establish a forum which aims at fighting misbehavior among girls and also mobilize girls to feel free to participate in leadership in the same way like their brothers.
In his remarks at the ceremony, NUR Rector Prof. Silas Lwakabamba commended the initiative and said that it can make an improvement in the behavior among female students.
He suggested that the leadership of GLF extends this initiative to other higher learning institutions and to even secondary schools so that young girls who join university can be informed of what they should do to build their future, the future of their families as well as the country.
The Executive Secretary of the Southern Province Jeanne Izabiriza, requested female leaders to work harder in order to change the image of university girls because it has been tarnished by the bad conduct of some students in the past
“This Forum should be committed to make a difference and build a new image of university girls to restore their trust,” said Izabiriza.
The GLF is made up of female students who are leaders in their classes, faculties, students union and associations. It has also an advisory board made of mothers and women religious pastors.
